Walter Suskind was a German Jew who fled from the Nazis to the Netherlands with his wife and daughter. When the Germans invaded Holland, Suskind was forced to serve as the Jewish head of deportation at the Hollandsche Schouwburg (the Jewish Theater), the main deportation site in Holland. During the 1 ½ years that he was in charge of the deportation center Suskind, with the help of the resistance, was able to save almost one thousand infants and children and many more adults.
This compelling documentary includes Suskind’s flight from Germany, his supremely courageous efforts in Amsterdam and the social and cultural impact of the rescue effort on post-war Holland. It is told by resistance workers, children who were saved, people from Amsterdam who knew Suskind or knew of him, and his two remaining relatives.
This event is free.
